COVID cases climb ahead of Christmas gatherings with family and friends

NEW YORK (AP) – Just ahead of big family gatherings for the Christmas holiday, climbing COVID cases have doctors worried. More than half of new COVID infections in the US are being blamed on the Omicron mutation. Federal health officials said Monday that this variant is now the dominant version of the coronavirus, accounting for 73% of new cases last week. CDC officials said they do not yet have estimates of how many hospitalizations or deaths are due to omicron.
