July 4th fun turns fatal for Washington hiker

LEAVENWORTH – July 4th fun turned fatal for a Vancouver, Washington hiker on Monday. The 44-year-old plunged about 100 feet to his death while climbing on the Icicle Buttress just south of Leavenworth. The woman who was with him flagged down a U.S. Forest Service officer in the area when a heavy rainstorm moved in and as the couple were being brought to safety he slipped and fell down the abutment. Chelan County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and determined that the victim died from his injuries sustained in the fall.
