OMAK – The U.S. Department of the Interior is shining the light on abuse that reportedly occurred at 400 federally-run schools for Native American children, including in Washingtion. An investigative report was released Friday showing the schools ripped children from their families and banned them from talking in their Native language or learning Native cultures and beliefs. The state had a total of 15 boarding schools, including St. Mary’s Mission in Omak, which closed in 1973.
