Elk herd spotted on SR 231 inherited transplant from early 1900’s

SPRAGUE – A large herd of elk were spotted crossing SR 231 on Thursday. WSDOT crews saw the elk sometime after sunrise just north of I-90 near Sprague [sprog]. A transportation spokesperson was unable to confirm if the elk were still in the area as of Thursday night. According to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the herd of Rocky Mountain elk are found primarily in eastern Washington and are an inherited transplant of elk from Yellow Stone National Park in the early 1900’s.
