Solitary Confinement Banned For Juveniles

Juveniles will no longer be allowed in solitary confinement as a punitive practice under a bill heading to Governor Jay Inslee’s desk. The measure was sought by Attorney General Bob Ferguson who cited studies showing solitary confinement is emotionally and psychologically damaging for youth. Solitary confinement can also worsen stress and other mental conditions. There is an exception where solitary can be used for safety reasons but for no longer than four hours.
